Reader Rabbit 1st Grade: Capers on Cloud Nine! is a computer game in The Learning Company's Reader Rabbit series of children's educational games. It was released in 2001 for Windows and Macintosh as the successor to the original Reader Rabbit 1st Grade.

Plot[]

Paige watches Sam the Lion watering his plants, when suddenly rain gear starts falling on them. Sam runs to Reader Rabbit's house and drags him outside, telling him that rain gear is falling from the sky. At first, Reader doesn't believe Sam, but then rain gear falls on him. The friends fly the Dreamship to the clouds as rain gear falls on Reader's face, making him land on Cloud Nine. They meet Queen Cumulus, who says that the rain gear is piling up on Cloud Nine and that it's coming from an island below. They go to Raingear Island, where they meet Irvin the Inventor, who explains that he's been throwing rain gear up at the clouds using a machine because he wants to stop the rain, which he dislikes. Reader explains that he should stop the machine because the rain gear is piling up on Cloud Nine, and if it falls, Cloud Nine and Wordville will be ruined. Irvin requires three items to turn off the machine, which Reader and Sam set off to find: a big round purple hoop, extra stretchy jumbo rubber bands, and an extra soft, double-stuffed feather pillow.

When Reader and Sam eventually give Irvin the three items, he makes a trampoline out of the hoop and rubber bands, jumps off it to turn off the machine, and lands on the feather pillow. Reader and Sam are relieved to have finally saved the day, but when they go to tell Queen Cumulus the good news, they see the pile of rain gear toppling over, so they collect the falling rain gear in barrels. The next day, Reader and Sam appear on the front page of the Cloud 9 News.

Re-releases and Compilations[]

In 2002, the game was re-released as a Special 2 CD Edition, which includes Reader Rabbit Dreamship Tales as a bonus disc. The game has been updated to be compatible with the Learning Launcher, a program launcher for games released by The Learning Company in the early 2000s. The subtitle has been removed in this version, except in the title screen.

Reader Rabbit 1st Grade: Capers on Cloud Nine was also included in the Reader Rabbit 1st Grade Learning System and Adventure Workshop: 1st-3rd Grade (9th Edition) CD compilations, both released in 2008, the former of which also includes Reader Rabbit Math Adventures Ages 6-9.

In 2011, the game was ported to the Nintendo Wii.

In 2012, the game was released digitally for Apple iOS. In 2014, it was released for macOS.

Trivia[]

  • This is the only game in the Dreamship series in which items must be clicked on by the player to store in Chester, rather than each item being placed in Chester immediately.
  • This is the only game in the Dreamship series to have multiple types of items, rather than items in a single category.
  • This is the only grade-based game in the Dreamship series in which Wordville is mentioned and Reader Rabbit's house is present.
  • Although the cover art shows Reader and Sam sliding down a cloud hill on cushions, there is no instance in which this happens in the game.
  • The music track played while inside Irvin's laboratory is re-used from the 2000 version of Learning Creations. This music track is also heard during the credits for each grade-based game in the Dreamship series.
  • During the intro sequence, when Sam drags Reader out of his house for help, he has a visible belly button, which is revealed when Sam grabs his shirt from behind. This detail is not seen in any other game.
  • Starting with this game, Reader and Sam's mouths are closed by default during gameplay.
  • Although the game's starting location is the path to Cloud Nine, its original Autorun screen shows Raingear Island, thus making it the only grade-based game in the Dreamship series in which its Autorun screen does not show its respective starting location. This is also the case with its demo screen.
