The Learning Company was the original developing and publishing company for Reader Rabbit products since the first title Reader Rabbit and the Fabulous Word Factory in 1984.

Reader Rabbit was one of their leading products from the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s.

Acquisitions[]

By 1995, The Learning Company was acquired by SoftKey, and in turn, SoftKey changed its name to "The Learning Company." By late 1998, the company was then acquired by Mattel, which eventually folded it into Mattel Interactive. By 2000, Mattel had sold the company to Gores Technology Group. Finally in 2001, the company was bought by Riverdeep Interactive Learning, which is now owned by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
